NATIONAL SCIENCE FOUNDATION
AVAILABILITY OF PUBLICATIONS
Research Reports
Research findings and results of studies supported by NSF are
generally published in scientific journals or as reports prepared
by the grantee institutions for NSF. Some of these technical
reports (and a few general publications as well) are sold by the
National Technical Information Service (NTIS), 5285 Port Royal Rd.,
Springfield, Virginia 22161, (703) 487-4650. For information on
the price and availability of these reports, contact NTIS.
Other Publications
This booklet lists publications issued by the National Science
Foundation and currently in the inventory of NSF or the Government
Printing Office (and in a few cases, NTIS). The first two digits
of the publication number indicate the year of publication. If
ordering from NTIS, be sure to give the PB number.
Price Information
Publications marked with the acronym "GPO" should be ordered from
the Superintendent of Documents, Government Printing Office,
Washington, D.C. 20402, (202) 783-3238. Prices are subject to
change, and those charged on orders may differ from the prices
listed here. If not shown, price information was unavailable when
this list was compiled.
Copies of publications marked with the acronym "NSF" are available
free of charge from National Science Foundation, Attn: Forms and
Publications, 1800 G Street, N.W., Rm. 232, Washington, D.C. 20550,
(202) 357-7861. To order publications by mail, use order card in
back of book.
Libraries
Many of the publications listed under "General Publications" and
"Science Resources Studies" are also available at university (and
some local) libraries, through the Government Printing Office's
depository library program.
Ordering by Electronic Mail
If you are a user of electronic mail and have access to either
BITNET or Internet, you may prefer to order publications
electronically. BITNET users should address requests to pubs@nsf.
Internet users should send requests to pubs@.nsf.gov. In your
request, include the NSF publication number and title, number of
copies, your name, and a complete mailing address. Publications
will be mailed within 2 days of receipt of request.

SCIENCE RESOURCES STUDIES (SRS)
(CFDA 47.053)
SRS produces three major types of reports, which are based on
surveys and studies: Science Resources Studies Highlights,
Detailed Statistical Tables, and Analytical Reports. Free paper
copies of these reports may be obtained by telephoning the Office
of the Director, Division of Science Resources Studies (O/DD),
(202) 634-4622.
Detailed Statistical Tables are available on diskette as well
as in paper copy. A free diskette service is available by which
the prospective user can obtain Tables on data-diskette sets in
exchange for a set of blank diskettes. The data-diskette sets are
produced in ASCII and/or LOTUS format. The number of diskettes in
each setand therefore the number of blank diskettes required from
the prospective user varies according to which format was used.
For information on the identity of the format and number of blank
diskettes required, as well as on the procedures by which data
diskettes and blank diskettes may be exchanged, call SRS, (202)
634-4634. Detailed Statistical Tables in both types of hard copy
microfiche and paper copy may be obtained from the National
Technical Information Service; for price information, call (703)
487-4650.

ELECTRONIC ACCESS TO NSF PUBLICATIONS
In the near future, NSF will be providing electronic access to
publications, program announcements, and award information. Many
publications now available in printed form, such as this list, are
candidates for the new system.
The Science and Technology Information System (STIS) will support
multiple simultaneous users. The main goal of the system is to
provide easy browse access to textual information. The
information, including the Guide to Programs and descriptions of
active awards, will be accessible by keyword, by standard topic or
by NSF program.
Users will be able to download copies of full documents.
Longer-term plans include offering copies of documents for download
in Post-Script format.
Access to STIS will be via dial-up connection or remote log-in
across Internet.
STIS will reside on a computer at the Foundation. NSF is also
exploring the possibility of providing the same electronic
information through other not-for-profit electronic information
services that serve scientific researchers.
Information on progress of the STIS effort will be published
through such sources as the NSF Bulletin, NSF Directions
newsletter, and the grants electronic bulletin board.
The Foundation provides awards for research in the sciences and
engineering. The awardee is wholly responsible for the conduct of
such research and preparation of the results for publication. The
Foundation, therefore, does not assume responsibility for such
findings or their interpretation.
The Foundation welcomes proposals on behalf of all qualified
scientists and engineers, and strongly encourages women,
minorities, and persons with disabilities to compete fully in any
of the research and research-related programs described in this
document.
In accordance with Federal statutes and regulations and NSF
policies, no person on grounds of race, color, age, sex, national
origin, or disability shall be excluded from participation in,
denied the benefits of, or be subject to discrimination under any
program or activity receiving financial assistance from the
National Science Foundation.
Facilitation Awards for Handicapped Scientists and Engineers (FAH)
provides funding for special assistance or equipment to enable
persons with disabilities (investigators and other staff, including
student research assistants) to work on an NSF project. See the
FAH program announcement, or contact the FAH Coordinator in the
Directorate for Education and Human Resources.
The National Science Foundation has TDD (Telephonic Device for the
Deaf) capability, which enables individuals with hearing impairment
to communicate with the Division of Personnel and Management about
NSF programs, employment, or general information. This number is
(202) 357-7492.
